Scar Revision

What is scar revision?

Scar revision surgery is a procedure to minimize a scar or reorient a scar so that it is less conspicuous and blends in with the surrounding skin tone and texture. Scars are visible signs that remain after a wound has healed. They are the unavoidable results of injury or surgery, and their development can be unpredictable. Scars may be obvious, unsightly or disfiguring. There are several types of scars and each must be approached with a trained eye and meticulous surgical technique.

Who is a good candidate for scar revision?

Scar revision can be performed on any age group and is a good option if:

  • You are bothered by a scar anywhere on your body
  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke
  • You do not have active acne or other skin diseases in the area to be treated
  • You have realistic goals for your scar revision surgery

What should I expect during a consultation for scar revision?

Your fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon will discuss your history in detail, including why you want the surgery and what your expectations and desired outcomes are. We will examine your scar in detail and take photographs. We will then discuss your treatment options and discuss the likely outcomes, including risks or potential complications.

Will I be asleep during scar revision?

Your procedure will be performed in our office under local anesthesia.

What will the wound look like?

When your procedure is finished, you will have bandages or dressings applied to keep the surgical site clean. You will be given specific instructions on how to take care of the wound following surgery. The initial healing phase of a surgical scar revision may include swelling, discoloration or discomfort and may take 1 to 2 weeks. Healing will continue for several weeks and as the new scar heals it will slowly refine and fade. Other procedures such as dermabrasion, chemical peel or laser resurfacing may be recommended for additional scar improvement.

At Phoenix Surgical Dermatology Group, we aspire to provide world-class care in a compassionate and friendly manner. If you have a scar you would that is bothersome to you, contact us for a consultation with a fellowship-trained Mohs and reconstructive surgeon.
